Are you a problem-solver with a natural instinct to care for others? Join us at our highly-respected School of Nursing.

The Australian healthcare system is one of the best in the world. If you’d like to be part of it, and in a profession that truly makes a difference, nursing could be a great fit.

Why choose Murdoch’s School of Nursing to help launch your career? Read on to find out more.

What is nursing?

These are essential, highly-skilled professionals who work across a range of settings. Nursing is a regulated profession in Australia, so you must be registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA).

Did you know that nurses and midwives make up more than half of Australia’s health workforce? We are the glue that holds patient care together, and there is a huge scope of jobs – in remote community outreach, in mental health, on a busy hospital ward, in aged care, in orthopaedics, intensive care or in child and adolescent healthcare, and so much more.

A day in the life of a Nursing student

Our Bachelor of Nursing provides a great foundation for a promising career. You’ll learn how to translate knowledge and skills into real life situations, how to operate as a nurse, and you’ll hone your caring and teamwork skills. Find out more about careers in nursing.

As a student you might:

  • Discover what qualities make an effective nurse.

  • Explore the complexities of disease management.

  • Brainstorm healthcare initiatives with classmates.

  • Read up on interesting facts about patient psychology.

  • Learn how other cultures manage healthcare.

  • Don a uniform and treat a ‘patient’ having a heart attack in our Sim Suite, or

  • Wrap your head around the different pharmaceuticals you’ll administer to patients, clients or residents in your care.

Learn what makes us tick at the School of Nursing.

The Good Universities Guide 2024 rated our nursing course 5-stars for learning resources, overall experience and skills development.

The Murdoch difference

Studying a Bachelor of Nursing at our school means you’ll join a vibrant and diverse community that encourages an innovative and dynamic culture. We’re never content to sit on our hands on and do things ‘how they’ve always been done’.

We’ve made sure our courses and experiences reflect this ethos and are well-rounded, which we know you’ll appreciate both as a student and later as a working professional. For example:

Sim Suites

Our Mandurah and Perth campuses house state-of-the-art nursing facilities. These are fully-equipped clinical teaching wards, treatment areas and simulation suites that mimic reality, preparing you for real-life experiences. Students start placements from first-year, so Sim Suites are a welcome area to build skills in a safe setting.

We use lifelike, high-tech mannequins with realistic capabilities, and you’ll face scenario-based simulations such as heart attacks, strokes and anaphylactic reactions. Tasks include looking for symptoms, diagnosing their health condition, preparing medication, and observing and monitoring the patient. You’ll also be communicating with your unwell patient, adhering to hygiene regimens, and prepping documentation.

e-Portfolio

Our award-winning ePortfolio program allows students to present assignments, practicums and results in a format suitable for showcasing to future employers. The recorded activities and assessments are linked to course learning outcomes and aligned with industry practices, protocols and standards. Plus, students have lifetime access to this web-based program.

Culture and community

Murdoch is one of the smaller nursing schools in WA. This means you’ll get to know your lecturers and tutors well and have a close-knit cohort. They may even end up as future colleagues.

We work closely with industry partners to develop health research projects that engage directly with the needs of our community. Learn more.

Beyond the classroom

It’s not just on-campus where the magic happens. Off-campus opportunities include:

  • Study abroad. There’s a highly-valuable option to take an international practicum... Students work with local healthcare staff in hospitals, and provide health education and assessments to the local community. Learn more.
  • Industry placements. Nursing students complete 840 hours of work experience in hospitals, aged care, and community settings throughout WA. We have close links to industry, in particular the extensive Fiona Stanley Hospital Precinct and Peel Health Campus.
  • Study exchange. Being at uni doesn’t mean you have to put travel plans on hold. Take a semester or two at one of our partner universities, living on campus and experiencing life in another culture.

Using virtual reality to train our future nurses.

Your future awaits

We’ve always been a university of difference, embracing diversity and progressive thinking since we opened our doors 50 years ago. Murdoch University is one of the most inclusive universities in Australia with a strong, ongoing commitment to the First Nations community and within nursing and research.

We were also one of the first to offer distance education and alternative entry pathways. We’re always prepared to walk a new path, improving as we go, and that’s why we are continually revising our offerings, such as we have done with Sim Suites and the e-Portfolio, and our current experimentation with VR.

This ensures nursing practitioners and leaders of the future think differently too. Join us on this shared journey for a strong and skilled healthcare.
