What it’s like to study a health degree

What it?s like to study a health degree

Psychology student Varun is in his second year at Murdoch. He explains a bit about his experience studying psychology, his advice for high schoolers looking to study health, and what he wish he knew when choosing his degree.

Tell us a bit about your course and what you’ve experienced so far.

I am currently studying Psychology. I have always found psychology really interesting as it involves figuring out what makes people ‘tick’. You gain a deeper understanding of why people behave the way they do, and an understanding of how the world works.

What does an average day looks like for you at uni?

An average day would involve attending a lecture (or two!) and a tutorial class. Tutorials are great for discussing ideas and interacting with your fellow students.

What do you think is the most important ingredient for success as a student?

Not giving up! Keep battling through the tough times, and you’ll love the fun times.

How would you describe the thinking skills that are most important for success as a student?

Being able to ask ‘why’! Never be afraid to voice your opinion, but also be ready to listen to others. If you develop your ability to think critically and ask questions you will stand out to your future employers.

What is your advice for high school students wanting to pursue a career in psychology?

Choosing to study a Psychology degree does not mean that you have to end up working as a psychologist. You could end up working in forensics, sport science, clinical psychology, or research. You could even branch into the world of business by becoming an organisational psychologist!

Looking back to when you were choosing your degree, what do you wish you’d known then that you know now?

Psychology is a massive discipline encompassing biology, neuroscience, sociology, medicine, philosophy, and even economics! Find the area that you are most passionate about – there will be something to spark your interest!

If you had to choose just one thing that you did or learned at Murdoch that you believe will make or break your career, what would it be?

Get involved in extra-curricular activities! Do volunteer work, attend conferences, participate in leadership programs – whatever it is, it will be way more valuable than just a high GPA at the end of your degree.
