Murdoch University advisors and distinguished researchers have made a strong showing in this year’s Queen’s Birthday Honours.

World renowned whale shark researcher, Murdoch distinguished alumnus and University Adjunct Associate Professor Brad Norman (pictured above) has been made a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia for his significant service to science as a marine biologist.

Expert historian and Murdoch Adjunct Associate Professor Lenore Layman, who contributed to the Australian Asbestos Network, has also been made an AM for her service to higher education, particularly in the fields of Australian and public history.

Former State Education Minister and member of the Murdoch University Art Board Dr Liz Constable has been made an AM for her significant service to the people and Parliament of Western Australia, and to education.

The Mayor of the City of Kwinana Carol Adams, who is a Murdoch alumnus and member of the Dean’s External Advisory Board at the School of Law, has been honoured with a Medal (OAM) of the Order of Australia for her service to local government and the community.

A member of the Vice Chancellor’s External Advisory Board and the Chair of the School of Business’ Advisory Board, Gail McGowan has received a Public Service Medal. Ms McGowan is another Murdoch alumnus and the current Director General for the Department of Planning, Lands and Heritage.

Valuable service to Murdoch

Murdoch University Vice Chancellor Professor Eeva Leinonen congratulated each of the recipients and thanked them for their valuable service to Murdoch University.

“Each of the recipients richly deserves these honours for their on-going work in the communities they serve,” Professor Leinonen said.

“They have all contributed to the success of our University and we are deeply grateful for their tireless work across research, strategy and in their advisory capacities.

“I am particularly proud when I see Murdoch alumni go on to achieve success in their fields and these honours reflect their years of hard work and commitment, all backed by a Murdoch University grounding.”

The Order of Australia is the pre-eminent means by which Australia recognises the outstanding and meritorious service of its citizens.
