Open day provides taste of uni life
Record crowds flocked to Murdoch University on Sunday to get a taste of uni life at Murdoch’s Open Day.
More than 20,000 people visited the campus to learn more about study and career options and enjoyed dozens of activities relating to Murdoch’s teaching and research.
Murdoch University Vice Chancellor Eeva Leinonen said Open Day was a window into everything the university has to offer.
“Open Day is an opportunity to showcase our courses, facilities, beautiful campus as well as some of our wonderful students, staff and alumni,” Professor Leinonen said.
“It was wonderful to see so many people enjoying the vibrant atmosphere on campus and taking advantage of the opportunity to sample university life.”
One of the highlights of the day was a free lecture by renowned psychologist Charlotte Keating, who shared tips for parents to help teens to cope with most stressful years of their life with balance, optimism and compassion.
This talk was part of a popular lecture series running throughout the day where industry professionals and academic experts shared their knowledge on a range of topics.
The guest speakers covered everything from starting your own business and learning about future careers and employability, to exploring forensic techniques. There was also Q&A session with Dr Chris Smith from the world’s premier science podcast, The Naked Scientist.
Showcasing learning and research
Around the campus there was an endless array of fun and informative activities available, including more than 200 course hotspots designed to showcase different aspects of learning, teaching and research at Murdoch.
Visitors could try their hand at everything from learning more about serial killers with our expert criminologists and watching students stage a mock trial on dating etiquette.
Adults and kids alike tested their fitness with the exercise scientists while chiropractic students were busy all day offering soft tissue massages.
The Open Day crime scene was busy all day with visitors trying their hand at crime scene investigation and extracting DNA. Virtual reality experiences were on show at both the education SimLab facility and the IT gaming labs.
A collection of information domes on Bush Court were the bustling epicentre of the event, where staff and students were on hand to provide advice on courses, alternative pathways, career experience opportunities, student support, opportunities to study abroad and student accommodation.
The day was jam-packed with awesome giveaways, career insights, inspiring talks, a Winter wonderland, campus tours, and the chance to experience Sound On with a free glitter bar and silent disco.
