New installation shows LGBTIQA+ pride 'across' campus

Untitled design-63

As part of an ongoing commitment to LGBTIQA+ allyship and an inclusive campus culture, Murdoch University has installed a pride-themed crosswalk.

Located just off South Street, the crossing dons the colours of the Progress Pride Flag and runs alongside the regular crosswalk.

The ‘Progress’ Pride Flag, designed by Daniel Quasar in 2018, is inspired by the original 1978 rainbow Pride Flag.

A chevron arrow pointing to signal forward movement also highlights that progress is still needed, with the arrow’s colours representative of transgender and gender diverse individuals and people of colour.

This flag was chosen to signify intersectional inclusion, one of the University’s key Equity, Diversity and Inclusion initiatives.

Em Readman, Chair of Murdoch University’s LGBTIQA+ Advisory Group, said the crossing was part of the broader efforts to signal an inclusive campus climate.

I hope students, staff and visitors who see this crossing walk onto our campus with pride and take away that it is a symbol of our values as a university community,” they said.

With Equity, Diversity and Inclusion a priority for the University, the crossing joins the extensive resources developed to ensure the campus is a safe and welcoming environment.

The Ally Network, made up of more than 150 staff, all-gender toilets, student-run spaces for the LGBTIQA+ community, the LGBTIQA+ Advisory Group and staff ally training are just a few of the initiatives in place to commit to genuine, long-term allyship.
