Murdoch University law alumni Ben Bullock will set off on an epic motorcycle journey around the world for the second time after his first attempt ended with a scare in Bali.

The Perth lawyer and former Masterchef Australia contestant was involved in a scooter crash, cracking his knee cap and foot and suffering some short term memory loss.

But the setback has not deterred Ben, who plans to set off on the journey from Perth in Western Australia to Perth in Scotland later this month.

“The whole idea behind the ride is to raise funds for and awareness of depression, and to show that, against adversity, in tough times – you can pull through. And I’ll pull through this,” said Ben.

“The experience made me stop and consider the seriousness of this journey and how any small slip ups or lapses in concentration could be incredibly dangerous.

“I was lucky this happened in Bali where I had friends around me and was only a $200 trip from home. It could have been much more serious and difficult if this crash had happened in Pakistan, for example.”

Murdoch’s School of Law is one of the sponsors of Ben’s 30,000km ride, which will take him through 30 countries. His first attempt saw him ride from Perth to Darwin and across to Bali in six weeks.

Ben is also cooking up a storm at various stops on the nine month journey, which will take him and his Hunter motorcycle along treacherous roads in the Himalayas, across the Middle East, through Southern Europe and north into Scotland.

He decided to throw caution to the wind and make the trip after a period of feeling lost, disengaged and aimless.

“I’m hoping this ride will send a message and inspire people to go out and have a go at the challenges they have always dreamed of completing, whether that might be climbing a mountain or even learning how to knit,” he explained.

“I’m also keen to start a conversation about suicide and depression, particularly between men. While in the Pilbara, the topic came up while chatting with a bunch of burly tattooed bikers. This was not the type of conversation you’d expect from this group but I was pumped to see people understanding that it’s okay to talk.”

Ben’s journey will raise funds for Beyond Blue, a charity which works to promote good mental health, tackle stigma and discrimination and provide support and information on anxiety, depression and suicide.

Law Dean Professor Jürgen Bröhmer, said the school was proud to be supporting Ben’s journey.

“Ben has always been a great ambassador for Murdoch and we are delighted to be associated with this epic undertaking. We wish him well,” he said.
