Murdoch health and agricultural scientists recognised as Highly Cited Researchers in 2024 Clarivate List
Three of Murdoch University’s esteemed academics have been included in the prestigious 2024 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list.
Professor Una Ryan, Professor Jeremy Nicholson and Professor Rajeev Varshney have been recognised for their exceptional contributions to their respective fields in health research and agricultural genomics.
Highly Cited Researchers are a select group, representing only one in 1,000 scientists and social scientists worldwide.
They are chosen based on their outstanding performance in one or more of the 21 broad fields and their significant influence through the publication of multiple highly cited papers over the past decade.
The selection process involves identifying publications that rank in the top one percent by citations for field and publication year in the Web of Science citation index.
Professor Una Ryan, from Murdoch University's Health Futures Institute, is an internationally recognised parasitologist.
Her groundbreaking work on enteric parasites, such as Cryptosporidium, and blood-borne parasites like Trypanosomes, has informed public health policy decisions and earned her two patents.
Professor Jeremy Nicholson, Director of the Australian National Phenome Centre within Murdoch University's Health Futures Institute, is a pioneer in metabolic phenotyping and systems medicine.
His discoveries have been crucial in the fight against some of the world's most insidious illnesses and his recent discoveries are predicting and improving outcomes for long covid sufferers.
Professor Rajeev Varshney, a globally recognised leader in genome sequencing and genomics-assisted breeding, is also the Director of Murdoch University's Centre for Crop and Food Innovation.
Professor Varshney’s expertise in translational genomics and capacity building in agriculture has made a significant impact in the field and his research is contributing to advancing food security in Africa and Asia.
Murdoch University Deputy Vice Chancellor Research and Innovation, Professor Peter Eastwood, congratulated the researchers on their remarkable achievement.
"The Highly Cited Researchers list is an exceptionally high mark of a researcher's influence and an acknowledgement of the important work they are undertaking to advance global knowledge," Professor Eastwood said.
“Murdoch continues to foster a culture of excellence in research and innovation, and the inclusion of these three academics in the 2024 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list further solidifies their leadership.”
