Murdoch University Dubai was recognised for its efforts to provide hands on training for financial journalists in the UAE.

The University was honoured at a special programme at the Arab Media Forum 2019, for its role in delivering the Advanced Economic Journalism Programme organised by Dubai Press Club (DPC) and DP World.

Launched in October 2018, the six month programme featured hands-on training sessions, interactive workshops and assessments aimed at introducing journalists to best practices in financial markets, both locally and globally, and improving the quality of business reporting.

Murdoch University was the only university to be part of the Advanced Economic Journalism Programme, working in collaboration with Bloomberg, Sky News Arabia, CNBC Arabia, financial news-portal Argaam and Thomson Reuters Foundation.

Dean of Murdoch University Dubai, Dr James Trotter, said Murdoch University Dubai was honoured to be included in this important educational initiative of the Dubai Press Club and DP World.

“Engaging in this programme to provide high quality professional development for journalists is reflective of the University’s core values," Dr Trotter said.

We seek to make the world better place in all the communities where we have a presence.

The programme addressed a comprehensive range of professional topics to help economic journalists polish their skills and keep abreast of changes and economic trends.

Topics in the programme included Economic and Financial News Reporting; Accuracy and Impartiality; Interpreting Key Economic Indicators; Assessing Risks and Credit Ratings; Credit Crisis and its Impact and Writing about Key Trade Issues.

Equipping journalists for 21st century reporting

President of the Dubai Press Club, Her Excellency Mona Al Marri, said that the programme aimed to develop the analytical and research skills of media professionals in order to improve the quality of business reporting in the country.

“To effectively cover the Dubai economy, which has emerged as a global business and commercial hub, media organisations need to be equipped with advanced skills,” she said.

“I take this opportunity to thank all our partners, particularly DP World, a leading institution in the UAE that has helped build bridges of economic cooperation between Dubai and many parts of the world.

“I also extend my appreciation to the media, academic institutions and the lecturers who enriched the workshops with their experiences.”

His Excellency Mohammed Al Muallem, Chief Executive Officer & Managing Director, DP World, highlighted the importance of having business reporters with deep knowledge in economic affairs, so they are able to highlight the UAE’s economic achievements.

The programme was part of an ongoing series of different training initiatives developed and facilitated by Murdoch University Dubai with the Dubai Press Club and other related organisations.
