Guide Dog called ‘Murdoch’ symbolises strong partnership

A guide dog in training will go by the name “Murdoch” in recognition of the special partnership and bonds of friendship between Guide Dogs WA and The Animal Hospital at Murdoch University (TAHMU).
Black labrador Murdoch was recently introduced to final year veterinary school students attending their “badge ceremony” – a significant event marking the commencement of a pivotal year bridging the gap between academic learning and professional practice.
“The naming of Murdoch – especially in Murdoch University’s 50th anniversary year – highlights the collaborative relationship between TAHMU and Guide Dogs WA,” Associate Dean of Engagement Professor Cristy Secombe said.
Guide Dogs WA puppies enter the Training Program at eight weeks of age and at approximately 16 months, they enter training to become a Guide; Autism Assistance; Facility; Brood; or Companion Dog.
Guide Dogs WA Breeding Manager Dion Humbler said the partnership between Guide Dogs WA and TAHMU was long-standing and genuinely beneficial.
“Our dogs have benefited from the exemplary veterinary care received at The Animal Hospital,” he said.
“In exchange, Murdoch University’s veterinary students have been able to view and learn about the reproductive procedures we undertake at Guide Dogs WA, producing the next generation of working dogs that will help to change lives.”
Murdoch, like the veterinary students, is in a crucial phase of his training. As a Puppy in Training, Murdoch is learning to confidently navigate various environments and respond to basic commands.
“His presence at the badge ceremony symbolises the shared journey of learning and growth,” Mr Humbler said.
“Just as the veterinary students are transitioning from theoretical knowledge to practical application, Murdoch is developing his skill set to become a reliable Guide or Assistance Dog.
“This parallel journey underscores the importance of practical experience in both veterinary education and guide dog training.”
