Introducing the hidden gem of a school that is having a big impact in surprising ways. Find out what we offer and how you can be a part of it!

Are you looking to make a big impact on the world through a unique career? Do you have a broad interest in STEM subjects? Are you a problem solver who likes to approach each task in a new way? If this sounds like you, our School of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, and Physics is exactly where you should be.

What’s special about the School of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, and Physics Murdoch (MSCP)?

At the School of Mathematics, Statistics, Chemistry, and Physics, we believe in overcoming boundaries. This is clear from our approach to science, but it’s equally true of our commitment to breaking down barriers between staff and students. Our academics are approachable and supportive, and we strive to increase interaction between staff and students through smaller class sizes. We’re proud of our diverse and inclusive community of passionate people, connected through a shared drive and sense of purpose.

On the academic side, our projects span fundamental and applied scientific research, industrial and statistical consulting for government policy work, and the private sector. The academic and research team has contributed to breakthroughs in:

  • Deciphering geographic correlations in disease incidence rates.
  • Innovative low-cost mineral extraction technologies that reduce environmental impact and carbon footprint.
  • Using biomimicry to inspire new functional materials.
  • Closing the loop by developing strategies for resource recovery from industrial waste streams.
  • Overcoming the hydrophobicity and salinity of Western Australian soils.
  • Combining material science and molecular biology within the framework of applied mathematics to predict Achille’s tendon repair and adaption, and
  • Elucidating charge-transfer mechanisms to design next generation organic light emitting diodes.

Meet your academics

You’ll be learning from experts in a diverse range of specialities. Here’s just a hint of our academic and professional expertise:

  • Chemistry: inorganic, solution, analytical and synthetic chemistry, computational quantum chemistry, geochemistry and mineral science.
  • Physics: soft matter physics, photonics, nanotechnology and functional materials, and biophysics.
  • Mathematics and Statistics: Industrial and applied mathematics, biomathematics, spatial statistics and biostatistics, data science.

Meet our team, check out our research projects, and see what your student experience will be like.

A fork in the road: your life, your career path

We provide a range of options for you to shape your own career. The first step is to decide which discipline matches your career aspirations.

Study a Bachelor of Science (Physical Sciences) to major in either Physics or Chemistry, or choose a Bachelor of Science (Mathematical Science) to major in Mathematics and Statistics. Become a double threat with a combined major in a complementary area, for example Mathematics and Statistics combined with Engineering or Software Development. You may also enrol in a double degree, such as Chemistry plus Law or Business. Or take a postgraduate to further build specialist skills in your MSCP area of interest.

Building a brighter future, together

We honour the pioneering principles Murdoch University started 50 years ago, with Ngala kwop biddi, building a brighter future together. It’s a shared purpose in which we seek to: change lives and society for the better through accessible education and research; contribute to the solution of societal and environmental challenges; provide an inclusive, caring community in which everyone can realise their potential.

We’ve been known as a trailblazing university since the very beginning, and we’re not slowing down now.
