Murdoch University is leading the switch from traditional fossil fuels to clean renewables, helping shape a greener, cleaner, and brighter future for all.

Just for a moment, imagine a world without engineering.

No roads, no electricity, no potable water, no steam engine, no antibiotics, no gaming, no Egyptian pyramids. And no Internet! It’s wild to think that, while these are incredible feats, we’re only just scratching the surface of what is truly possible through engineering.

What’s special about the School of Engineering and Energy at Murdoch?

Three major issues facing society today include: emissions from energy production and consumption, excessive waste production, and climate change. Energy is at the heart of the climate emergency, and the transition to net-zero is a research focus of our School of Engineering and Energy. We develop solutions to address the pressing issues faced by humanity today, whilst meeting the evolving needs of tomorrow.

Since our school was established in the 1990s, our engineers have been involved in:

  • Designing iconic wind farms.
  • Revolutionising energy with lithium and natural resources.
  • Pioneering water management strategies.
  • Transforming industrial waste into medical-grade plastics through advanced recycling.
  • And more!

We’re still leading the way today in areas such as sustainable water, waste and land management, and renewable technologies. Find out more about our facilities and resources, and what your student experience will be like.

Murdoch has the longest-running tertiary education program in energy in Australia: the Master of Renewable and Sustainable Energy.

Meet your academics

Our faculty members, with their strong industry experience and networks, actively contribute to research that addresses global challenges and align with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals. All are highly-accomplished, with the majority ranked in the top 5-20% of their research areas, based on their publications. As a student, you’ll be learning from professionals with real-world experience. For example, Dr Jonathan Whale, internationally-renowned researcher and 30-year veteran of sustainable energy with a special interest in wind turbines.

We are passionate about our areas of expertise, bringing a high level of skill to the school in renewable energy and distributed energy resources, environmental and sustainable systems, robotics and autonomous systems, and electrical power systems.

One third of the world's food is wasted each year, with around 7.6 million tonnes wasted in Australia alone. Here’s what we’re doing about it.

A fork in the road: your life, your career path

In 2023 we redesigned our engineering course portfolio. Why? We create our courses with industry guidance to make sure we’re providing students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the workforce.

With this in mind, our popular Bachelor of Engineering Technology allows you to specialise in one of three majors in areas of growing demand:

  • Electrical and Renewable Energy Engineering
  • Environmental Engineering, and
  • Industrial Control and Automation Engineering

There are also postgraduate courses such as Energy and the Environment, and Energy and Carbon Studies. Or take the next step in your career in instrumentation like Deepa has done, with a Master of Engineering Practice. Learn about careers in this extraordinary field.

We were the first WA university to sign up to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals initiative, which pledges access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all.

We’re building a brighter future, together

We’ve been a trailblazing university from the beginning, pushing boundaries and striving toward our vision of a brighter future for all. As a leading institution, we continue to drive innovation through new initiatives and supporting the development of companies that focus on solving sustainability and engineering challenges.

We’re also proud to guide the next generation of professionals who are excited about a better tomorrow.
