Learn what the jobs of the future will look like and the skills you will need to win them at Murdoch University’s Open Day.

With the jobs of the future expected to be more machine-powered and data-driven than in the past, you can learn about the rapidly changing world of work and how Murdoch University prepares students for the changing world of work in one of the many information sessions at the University on Sunday 28 July.

Running from 10am to 2pm, Open Day will be jam-packed with awesome giveaways, career insights, inspiring talks, a Winter wonderland, campus tours, and the chance to experience Sound On with a free glitter bar and silent disco.

Thousands of high school students and young adults are expected to visit the campus, with the 2018 Open Day rated the best of all Western Australian universities by three out of four attendees.

During Open Day, a panel of highly experienced Murdoch academics and career and employment centre experts will discuss future career trends and how to enhance your employability.

Attendees will discover the top five tips to enhance employability, with students able to consider why they have chosen their courses, and how well prepared they feel for their future.

The future of work

Murdoch University Domestic Engagement Manager Kerina Puttman said much of the narrative around the future of work indicates that human skills such as problem solving, creative thinking, communication skills, interpretation and design would be required as jobs incorporate and adapt more technology and become more data-driven.

“Globally, we are seeing a boom in the development of technology and Artificial Intelligence and the growth in this technology will see jobs created in these fields across a wide range of sectors,” Ms Puttman said.

“Some of the important skills and qualities required in the future will be creativity, problem solving, adaptability, team work, communication and digital literacy,” Ms Puttman said.

“Demand is in for graduates who are not only adept and literate in technology, but able to engineer data-driven insights to solve crucial issues.

Ms Puttman said the Australian Government’s Job Outlook website suggested that more than 90 per cent of new jobs over the next five years would require higher education qualifications.

Murdoch University was well placed to equip its graduates with professional qualifications and prepare its students to be a competitive force for the future world of work.

“Murdoch offers a wide range of courses, with units designed to give students the practical and transferable skills that they will need for their entire career,” Ms Puttman said.

“This includes developing the ability to manage their career, work in a digital environment, and network like a professional.”

The session “Future careers and how to enhance your employability” will be held at Kim E Beazley Lecture Theatre (Building 351) at 1.15pm during Open Day. For more information on the many activities and experiences available on Open Day, go to the 2019 Murdoch Open Day website.
