Embracing university life prepared Jazlynn to excel

Student smiles in Murdoch hoody

Jazlynn always knew she was interested in studying a Bachelor of Criminology and her first choice from the start was Murdoch.

With a passion for helping others, Jazlynn cites a love of Crime Scene Investigation (CSI) as her earliest memory of wanting to pursue this career.

“CSI was and still is one of my favourite TV shows and was what actually made me want to pursue criminology – I watched this with my dad all the time when I was younger.”

When it came to choosing where to study, the choice was easy. “I wanted to find a university with professors that were hands on with the learning experiences of the student.”

“I wanted to find I place where I felt welcomed and could belong.”

Part of the Murdoch community

Jazlynn embraced university life, getting involved as the Women’s Representative on the Guild, working on the Murdoch Criminology Society and being part of the 2019 Guild Ball Committee.

“The social life at Murdoch came from the societies and activities you took part in and there was always something on that I could go to or be a part of. Everyone was friendly and approachable.”

Preparing for a successful career

In her final year of study, Jazlynn secured a full-time job as a Case Manager and more recently works as a team leader in the Transition to Work program while studying her Master of Criminology. Upon completion of masters, she plans to transition to a role more directly in her field.

She credits her time at Murdoch for helping her to prepare her for a successful career.

“Murdoch has taught me the importance of the life skills we possess and through my studies I gained more of a passion to help make the world and my world a better place. I have been able to work with youth who have been incarcerated and have had the chance to show them that they are supported and have support programs in place to ensure they stay on the right track.”

Advice for future students

When reflecting on her achievements, Jazlynn encourages current and future students to take a chance and be brave. “Be bold and brave and change your world for the better. It is all about perspective, take this chance at Murdoch to change your mind and perspective and let the rest fall into place.”
