Do I need a high ATAR to get into law?

Moot Court at Murdoch University

Dreaming of becoming a lawyer? Not sure where to start? Whether you are hoping to enter a Bachelor of Law straight out of high school, as a non-high school leaver or making the transition the transition from your current career - we’ve got you covered.

At Murdoch University, we know people’s circumstances aren’t a direct reflection of their ability to succeed. Which is why we have a range of alternative pathways into university, even for those looking to study law.

We’ve broken down our three alternative entry pathways into a Bachelor of Laws at Murdoch – Law Start, Pre Law, and the Bachelor of Laws (LLB) - Graduate Entry.

Law Start

Law Start is an alternative admission law pathway for high-school leavers that doesn’t require the traditional ATAR requirements.

As long as you're excelling in one or more ATAR subjects with a strong focus on essay writing and communication, our Law Start admission pathway could be for you.

This law pathway involves a one-day workshop, followed by a written assessment. The written assessment tests your skills and ability for studying law and is used as a basis for admission, instead of your overall ATAR score or selection rank.

If you successfully complete the course and meet all eligibility requirements, you will receive an offer to study a Bachelor of Laws or a combined Law degree at Murdoch.

Pre Law

Even if you haven’t studied recently, can still be ready to succeed in a Bachelor of Laws. Our Pre-Law admissions pathway can provide entry into our Bachelor of Laws if you don’t qualify for standard entry.

Designed to assess your current ability, rather than fill a gap in your knowledge, Pre-Law allows you to demonstrate that you’ve got what it takes to be a Murdoch Law student.

Pre-Law is delivered as an online evening course and runs for six weeks. It equates to about the same contact hours, workload and rigour of a law unit.

If you achieve 60% or above in the unit, you could qualify for admission into our Bachelor of Laws degree.

Bachelor of Laws (LLB) - Graduate Entry

If you’ve already completed an undergraduate degree in any discipline, you can apply for the Graduate Entry Law. This course allows you to complete our Bachelor of Laws in just three years, adding to your existing studies whilst beginning your career journey to becoming a lawyer.

As a graduate law student, you can develop a unique specialisation by working with the strengths of your first degree whether that’s in science, health, criminology, business, or arts. You could choose to specialise in workplace law or personal injury litigation if you already have a health science degree, choose to focus on securities law, bankruptcy and liquidation and takeover law if you have a business degree or add to your criminology degree to become a criminal lawyer.

Not too sure which option is best for you? Reach out to our team and get your Murdoch journey kickstarted.
