Design thinking postgrad makes Nina ready for work

Student sits at desk and smiles at classmate

Nina is levelling up the skills learned in her bachelor’s degree at Murdoch by pursuing a postgraduate course in design thinking.

Nina Tomas enjoyed her undergraduate studies at Murdoch so much she took on an extra summer unit in the holidays, before starting her postgraduate unit. As an undergraduate, she studied a double major in Graphic Design and Strategic Communication. Now Nina is levelling up the skills learned in her bachelor’s degree by pursuing a postgraduate course in design thinking.

Nina’s approach to freethinking fits perfectly into postgrad degree

Choosing a Graduate Diploma in Design Thinking and Service Innovation fits perfectly into Nina’s preferred way of thinking. She’s always considered herself an artist and loves learning new topics and getting a better understanding of the world. Murdoch’s freethinking philosophy caters to her creative spirit while satisfying the logical, thoughtful, and analytical parts of her thought processes. This includes pushing her creativity beyond limits to find innovative solutions to communication.

“I feel like design thinking has completely changed how I perceived ‘thinking’,” Nina says.

“My head feels like this complex ball of rubber bands with many layers that somehow work.

The campus is huge and accommodates all types of learning.”

Design thinking postgrad diploma prepares students for real world

Nina says she wanted to study at Murdoch because of the quality of the graphic design courses. She received a financial scholarship while still an undergrad. Once she started her bachelor’s degree studies, she realised how well the coursework would prepare her for future work.

“The tutors who developed the units are passionate about bringing real-life experiences by allowing us to work with actual clients,” Nina says.

“Now studying as a postgraduate student, I am working side by side with prominent companies we see in Perth every day.

“Without my skills in the undergraduate course, I would not be as comfortable working as a post-graduate student, especially with how to communicate with organisations and understand people at an empathetic level.”

Working on projects and networking with real-world clients during her design thinking degree have helped kickstart Nina’s career in other ways. She started freelancing as a graphic designer as soon as she started her undergraduate, and the opportunities for employment continue in her graduate work. According to Nina, this is a common occurrence for Murdoch students.

“I will soon be lined up with work in the industry I am studying as my postgraduate, before I will graduate,” Nina says.

“I have had friends from all areas of campus, such as communication, law and journalist students, who have been offered jobs or internships, organised by their tutors.

“The tutors are amazing, and love to help you in the best way possible for your future.”

Practical experience a hallmark of Nina’s uni studies at Murdoch

One of the things that makes the Design Thinking course so appealing is the practical, real-world experiences. Nina feels like her course has provided excellent preparation for her future.

“Design thinking and service innovation is completely practical,” Nina says.

“Everything relies on researching, interviewing, building relationships, ideating and prototyping.”

Nina’s eyes have been opened to the power of research, something that didn’t interest her until she started the postgrad diploma in Design Thinking. She’s now devoting almost all of her time to research.

“This course has completely changed the way I view researchers and it makes research an enjoyable concept,” Nina says.

“I am working on a project I love with a team that is highly motivated.”

As Nina prepares for her future, she’s looking forward to the next chapter. It’s an exciting opportunity to put her Design Thinking education into practical use and make the student experience even better at Murdoch.

“I am waiting on hearing back from an employer to join his project as a visualiser.

“He works as a service designer for Murdoch University, using methods such as design thinking to find problems, map out systems, prototype and implement them.

“We will be working on some projects that will be implemented by next year for students and how they engage with the university.”
