Murdoch University congratulates veterinary science alumnus and recent honorary degree recipient Dr Craig Challen OAM on being named joint Australian of the Year for 2019.

Murdoch University Vice Chancellor Professor Eeva Leinonen said Dr Challen was a very worthy Australian of the Year.

“Craig carried out this heroic act with the world watching, acting with selflessness, immense skill and patience to help plan and execute the rescue, making a remarkable contribution to the world community,” Professor Leinonen said.

“We are proud to call Craig an alumnus and we were delighted last year to award him an honorary degree.

“He is a truly inspirational individual who personifies the Australian spirit and can-do attitude. Craig made a lasting impression on our graduates when he shared these attributes by speaking about the importance of facing great tests in life with courage and resilience.”

Dr Challen graduated from Murdoch in 1987 with a veterinary science degree, going on to co-found and build the Vetwest group of Animals Hospitals in Perth before retiring in 2017.
