Adding a little extra green to the rainbow for 2024 Pride Parade

Pride float

One of Murdoch’s favourite times of the year has arrived, and the University will take part in Perth’s PrideFEST Pride Parade this Saturday.

This year, the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) team has committed to a ‘green’ parade, ensuring float decorations can be used for years to come.

Among these sustainable decorations are rechargeable and reusable LED lights that will be used year after year instead of being discarded.

The sustainable elements don’t stop there, with attendees also opting to avoid items like balloons and confetti to minimise environmental impacts.

‘Together, Go West’, is the theme of this year’s parade, inspired by the Village People song that became an anthem for the LGBTIQA+ community.

PrideFEST 2024 seeks to modernise the message, and invite community, allies and people from all intersections to be visible, proud and safe.

EDI projects coordinator Em Readman said this message also reflected how the higher education sector is making steps on this journey – creating safe and inclusive spaces for all identities to learn and reach their full potential.

“In the past several years, I’ve seen perspectives shift within university communities,” they said.

I've seen changes in language, more people wearing rainbow pride lanyards around campus, there are important research papers written by members of the LGBTIQA+ community about real-world things that impact them.

Various schools, disciplines and clubs will be representing Murdoch University at the parade, including the School of Indigenous Knowledges, the School of Veterinary Medicine, the LGBTIQA+ Advisory Group, the School of Education, Counselling and Wellbeing and the School of Medical, Molecular and Forensic Sciences.

The 2024 PrideFEST Pride Parade will kick off on Saturday, November 23 with entertainment from 6pm and the parade beginning at 8pm.
